Neurologist Professor Mike Barnes wrote the report which convinced UK lawmakers to legalise medical cannabis last year.
According to Professor Barnes, despite huge demand in the UK, only around 22 patients have actually received medical cannabis, with none of those prescriptions coming through the National Health Service also known as the NHS.
He says the reason for doctors reluctance to prescribe cannabis medication, is due to the a lack of education and lingering stigma over cannabis.
“We’ve got to tell our doctors that a) it’s really safe and b) that it really does help a huge number of people with chronic conditions.”
“It’s not a cure-all for everything. It’s not a wonder drug. It is another very good and very safe [drug]. That’s the point to emphasise – it’s very safe. There are very few risks to cannabis. It does benefit a lot of conditions that are troubling to a lot of people.”

We received our annual visit yesterday from the Local Authority Environmental Health. They liked what they saw because we have again been given a Food Standards Agency 5 star Food Hygiene Rating. Congratulations to all our members for making sure The CBD Works maintains a high standard.
The Food Standards Agency is responsible for food safety and food hygiene across the UK. FSA work with local authorities to enforce food safety regulations and have staff who work in UK meat plants to check that the requirements of the regulations are being met. They also commission research related to food safety.
Each business is given a ‘hygiene rating’ when it is inspected by a food safety officer from the business’s local authority. The hygiene rating shows how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.
Why were we given 5 Stars?
The food safety officer inspecting a business checked how well we meet the legal requirements by looking at:
- how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
- the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
- how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe
At the end of the inspection, the business was given top marks! We got 5, which is the highest possible standard! The top rating of ‘5’ means that we were found to have ‘very good’ hygiene standards.
You can read more about the Food Standards Agency on their website and why it is such a great acheivment for The CBD Works to get a 5 STAR rating.
